Missionary Week#31

Missionary Week # 31           Date: April 15, 2019 – April 21, 2019

Glad Påsk at the back of the Chapel
Glad Påsk!  Happy Easter!  We enjoyed our Easter Break and hope that you all had a wonderful Easter.

Monday – We went to work in Sunny and pretty weather – more buds here and there – flowers popping up and leaves starting to come out.  We worked until 4:30 and then John thought it would be a good thing to check with one of the Young Single Adult leaders – his name is “Promise” – to see if they were still meeting for the Family Home Evening tonight.  He texted back saying – no they had cancelled it and thought we would’ve seen it on their Facebook page.  We didn’t know they even had one!  So we were able to go home!  We saw that the Notre Dam Cathedral was on fire!  What a shame.  We heard from our traveling daughter – Janell- she got home from Arizona after a layover in San Francisco!  Our Grandson, JT, emailed to ask more questions of Grandpa about the Viet Nam war – he’s been learning about it in School – so John sent him some stories and then we remembered John had put together a slide show of his pictures taken on his Instamatic camera, which he still has and a few videos on an old cheap plastic video camera – he doesn’t know where that ended up but he got a few movies from it.  So we told JT’s, Dad Jon to look it over first and then see if it was OK to show JT and it was ok – so JT looked at it and then asked if he could take it to school.   Grampa told him it was Ok and a few more emails back and forth he had some pretty good stories to go with the pictures.  JT reported back that the kids loved the stories and thought it was pretty cool and he thought it was Awesome! He only wished that Grampa was there to tell the stories. We did too!

Tuesday – We went to work still wearing our big coats, but it was warmer and sunny – I (Linda) worked for 11 minutes and I was at 0% available space and it wouldn’t allow me to capture anymore pictures!  So I worked on more Family History – after doing a few other work chores (like cutting out little slips of papers that we have to slip into any envelopes that we open that says we had permission to open the sealed envelopes) – I found an obituary for my great-grandmother Lucy Isabelle Davis Ashburn – which was first found by Kay Nelson Meyerette my 2nd cousin (Her grandmother Tressi was my grandfather’s George Anderson Ashburn’s Sister)-  I’ll add it as a picture. She died April 30, 1931 – my grandfather George A. died March 13, 1930 – just a year before her. Then I found a marriage application for my grandfather (George A.) that married my Swedish grandmother – but the application was with a different woman!  Her name was Ella Case, the application was dated Tuesday, 31 December 1907 but he actually got married to my grandmother on Saturday, January 4, 1908!  The record showed that the Marriage License was missing [because it probably wasn’t returned – because there was no marriage!] How crazy is that!?  I followed Ella Case through Census and a few other records and she did marry someone else in October or November of 1908.   We did get to hear from our son Jaylen this morning at work  – who was finishing up his night shift on patrol.

Wednesday -  We were up early, it gets light about 5:15 ish – so we left early for work and at our last stop, we got off the train and got to the escalators that take us up several floors to the elevator that takes us outside – the escalators were all at a standstill.  UGH!  We had to walk up this humungous escalator – I didn’t do very well, half way up I was ready to stop – John kept pushing me – as were the other 8 thousand people trying to get up the same escalator.  (I took pictures the next day).

Germany sent me an email to get some more room on my camera so I’m back to 3% left!  I was able to work all day.  We left work at 4pm and got the car and took it to the post office, IKEA – where we finally got Swedish FOOD!  I had Meatballs and John had fish.  We were able to talk to our kids, Justin and Jennifer.  Always good to catch up on our family.

Thursday – It’s getting a lot warmer – we got to the escalator and it was fixed!  If it hadn’t been, we had found an elevator [Hiss in Swedish] I was going to take!  We got to work, and our badges wouldn’t open the door!  Our janitor was outside too and another guy had tried the cafeteria door and it didn’t work either – we knew the Archive was only going to be open from noon to 3 because of the holidays but we never heard “Don’t come to work”  So we came back home and decided to go see Drottingholm Palace and we went on a guided tour – it is where the King & Queen really live now.  It was very pretty.  We sat on a bench in the nice warm sun and ate our packed lunch!  It was great!

The Entry Way
Then we went back home and left the car and got our badges and went back to work and we worked until 5.  We came home, had dinner and headed out to the Mission Office to have our Senior Couples Family Home Evening!  It’s turned out that our group is all from Arizona!  In fact the Ashby’s know The Michael Gomeric’s that used to live in St. Johns!  The Clouse’s also have several ties – they know one of our Niece’s in Gilbert and our Friends Artie & DeAnn Baker who are on a Mission in San Fran/Oakland California – their niece married the Clouse’s son.  We love small world stories!

Friday – This was the original day off that we expected!  Good Friday and we will also get Easter Monday – another holiday for the Swede’s.  We read scriptures – and studied the Come Follow Me book.   Our kids in SJ are carrying on our Easter tradition of camping with the Bakers – so with both Bakers’ and Us on a mission – there were 2 of our kids, Jenn & Jaylen and their families and 2 of the Baker’s sons Spencer & Rhett and their families to carry on the tradition – they went to the Beaver Ponds – by Greer, AZ where we always camp and it sounds like they had a great time – we got a few Marco Polos from them and it was great to see and hear the kiddos laughing and squealing.  We can’t wait to see more pictures!  We had dinner and did our laundry!  We got a call from John’s sister that they weren’t going to be visiting because of a death in her husbands’ family.  We were really looking forward to showing them around – but that will wait for another time!  We send our thoughts and prayers to the Price Family.
On our walk around Alvik

These are Feather trees at a round-a-bout ~ at Christmas there was
a Christmas Tree decoration with lights.
Saturday – We had a great morning, worked on computers for awhile and then we decided to go for a walk since it was beautiful outside!  We went outside for the first time WITHOUT COATS!  We walked around the neighborhood and ended up in Alvik and around the water there (Tranebergssund)– they have trails weaving around the water and through trees.   It was beautiful – we took several pictures and walked home – it was about a 2 hour walk.

Sunday – Just as we were getting ready for church we heard sirens coming from two different directions from the North and from the East – and they turned right where we needed to go to pick up the Borg’s for church!  By the time we got to where they were stopped – two ladder trucks had already turned around and passed us going back.  So I guess whatever happened they didn’t need everybody!  Church was great – Elder Borg was asked to speak and he did a great job.  I got some pictures of the decorations that were around – they have Birch twigs with feathers on them for color – I asked what they represented and they said it was tradition started a long time ago – the Birch twigs represented the sticks that were used to whip Christ and they didn’t know why the feather’s – other than it was for color!

We were invited to an Easter dinner in Handen by the Ashby’s so we took the train and met with them and the Clouse’s for Easter Dinner – yummy enchiladas!  Sister Ashby was going to make a Quiche – but then she thought – we’re all from ARIZONA and we all miss our Mexican food!  We had fun and a great discussion afterward on Easter and our testimonies.  We got home about 9pm and we still have another day off!
We hope your new week finds you happy and healthy and enjoying Spring!

Same email – but more pictures!

Missionary Week #30

Missionary Week #30  -  April 8, 2019 ~ April 14, 2019

Hello everyone!  We had a great week!  Spring is popping up all around us.  Plants are popping up from the ground – flowers, plants, and trees are starting to get new buds and some shrubs are starting to get their leaves.  We watched General Conference from Salt Lake City and the trees were in full bloom and were beautiful.

Monday – When we left for work it was 34* F (1*C) and it was cold!  It had rained but things were not too wet.  The city is starting to sweep up all the rocks that they lay down to keep from slipping.  It’s on all the sidewalks and at the train stations platforms.  So things are starting to look “Clean”.  We worked until lunch time and enjoy watching traffic, people, and people parking from the cafeteria!  Sometimes it’s comical and sometimes it’s down right impressive!  Most streets have parking – but you have to find the parking box for that street and buy a ticket to put on your dash.  We watch as some get their ticket and some who walk away in hopes that they make it back before they are caught!  We have learned that there is an app that you can put on your phone and purchase more time on your ticket – but you do have to have a ticket!  There is very rarely a place to park – and as we watched it was amazing how one car would leave there was a car that would pull right up and back in and take the spot immediately.
Today we didn’t go home after work we headed out for a bit of shopping, quick dinner (fish & fry’s) and on to the YSA Center (Young Single Adult Center for ages 18-30).  After having a Family Home Evening on Friday, General Conference on Sunday and then another Family Home Evening on this night – there was only 4 kids and US!  We had fun – we all talked about our favorite quote or story from the Conference and then one of the boys taught us how to do “Origami”!  He had us start out with a square of paper and we made a frog, cranes and then the boys got carried away and had an airplane competition!  One of the girls brought Snickerdoodles for our treat….Yummy – but I missed Elynn Badgers Snickerdoodles!  After we cleaned up we walked to the train station and it was still COLD.

Tuesday – It was still cold and when we got off the elevator for our street to the archive it was snowing!  We worked a normal day – and left a little after 4 and it was COLD_COLD and a light Snow.  We were so thrilled we didn’t have to go anywhere!  We’ve been spoiled!  We got Marco Polo’s from Jenn and her kids were just getting up after a night of kids being sick!  So they were in slow motion this morning.  We got another Marco Polo from Jaylen and he had his kids and Jon and his kids out in our front yard – picking up worms – it was night time, kids were suppose to be in bed – but Jaylen said the earth started moving and they got all the kids together and got a Thirst Buster Cup FULL of worms!  Most of the kids were giggling and squealing 😊, but I heard one who was not happy – he was scared of worms!
John and I have been watching the Safety Videos the Church has put out for us to watch.  They are really good but it’s so sad to see some of the accidents or sicknesses that have happened to missionaries and usually it’s because they have not been paying attention to their surroundings or not keeping the kitchen clean.  We have a few more to watch but they make you think about what you do and to be safer.

Wednesday – We went to work in a light sprinkle of rain – but at work it was snowing – it didn’t hit the ground it was just flies around!  Work was normal but I had to fix a few problems in my metadata, and It took me 2 hours to upload my 12 files to the shuttle that we send to Germany.  It was cold going home but nice we didn’t have to go again.

Thursday – When we went to work it was chilly and windy – a few snowflakes but they weren’t sticking.  We were able to talk to Jody, Jon and some friends.  We are sure grateful for technology like – phones and video calls and marco polos!

City Hall
Friday – we got a Marco Polo from our daughter Janell -she was driving and made us guess where she was!  She turned her phone around and she was in Payson, Arizona!  She had been missing her nieces and nephews so much she couldn’t stand it and headed out!  It’s a 6 hour flight from Hawaii – and then she rented a car – to drive 4 hours home.  So she knew we would be up so we talked back a forth for a while and she called when she made it home by 2:22 in the morning!  We are sure glad she was able to travel safe and get to see the kids.  Sounds like they all had a blast!

The top of the tower has 3 Crowns, pretty soon
we will be able to go up in the tower and take pictures
Saturday – We went in to Stockholm and walked around and went to the City Hall which is a beautiful building and is really an icon for the city.  We walked around and tried to find a tour – and found out they were all done with tours because they closed down for an event.  There are a lot of weddings that take place there – We heard if you live here you can get married there for free – but if you aren’t from here you pay about $60.  So, we took pictures and plan to go back later.  We walked around some more, we feel a bit more familiar with the downtown area.   We are noticing that the sun is up before we head out in the mornings at 6:30 – 6:40 setting around 7:45pm!  It feels so wonderful to feel the warmth.

Sunday – We were woke up when we heard more machines outside – it was actually chain saws.  We first thought it was road work and John got up to see what they were working on and found firetrucks and police outside – because the house across the street from us was on fire!  So, again we had front row seats to this event.  So sad, we assume they got all the people out – the house is split down the middle, so it is 2 apartments – the one on the right side still had lights on but the one on fire was dark. John said he saw firemen going in and out of the other apartment.  That was 4am – and when we left for church at 10:30 the trucks were finally pulling away and then these white vans pulled up and they started pulling furniture out and we guessed they were the clean up crew.  We don’t know if they always follow the fire trucks or if they were called in by the owner of the building.  Very interesting to find out – they don’t have fire hydrants here – they have holes in the ground – with man hole covers and the fire truck puts in their own “hydrant”.  Since John was a volunteer fireman for many years in Show Low, he was very interested to see how they did things!   When we got back from church – all the commotion was over and there is only police tape around the house.
We hope you all have a great week and have a wonderful Easter weekend.  We are grateful for our Savior Jesus Christ and hope that we can become more like him day by day as we study and learn from his examples.  We love and miss you and think of you all week!  Stay Safe and Happy Easter!

John & Linda

Missionary Week #29

Missionary Week #29     April 1, 2019 – April 7, 2019

Hello Everyone, Happy APRIL!  Another week has flown by again!  We received an Email from our team in Germany that checks our Quality – and they sent us a huge sheet of problems – which we don’t normally have.  Of course, we got the email on Thursday night and it would’ve been fine because we would have been able to find out on Friday – but we got Friday OFF!  So we had to wait for 3 days to get back to work to see what in the world happened!

Monday -  We anxiously went to work, we printed of the email and looked it over and found that the problems weren’t matching what we were seeing …. A little explanation…..we work on military cards – which also comes with a lot of medical papers – we have to mark the medical papers – so that they won’t be put on-line because of privacy issues.  So our email was telling us we hadn’t marked a bunch, and on the other side of the coin we had marked too many in some cases! We went through John’s work and then my work.  We then were ready to call our Friends in Germany and find out what was going on.  After a while they were able to see that they had a new program that they were using that wasn’t catching everything it should have!  That took us all morning to figure this out.  We were glad we were able to get it straightened out and get back to work.  We worked for an hour and got to go to lunch! We worked until 4 and then headed home and had to take the car to the Mission Office to take back 2 boxes of curtains that we had taken to the Örebro sisters last week.  We stopped by the grocery store to stock up and came home.  We were able to get a Marco Polo from The Baker’s who are on a Mission in San Fran/Oakland but got permission to go to Eagar for a new Grandson’s Blessing!  So, they were able to give our kids a big hug from them and US!  We got to see them at the luncheon afterward. So grateful for technology.

Tuesday – We went to work, it was chilly, but the Sun was out.  We noticed at lunch that it was getting windy.  Went home and got a call from Jaylen – trying to figure out our sprinkler system!  It’s so nice to have them there in our house and taking such good care of it!  We hear they have fixed our lumpy front yard – and replanted it, and they are repainting the house – they asked if we would have a problem with them painting it….ARE YOU KIDDING??? GO FOR IT!  But he won’t let us see it until it is done!

Then we headed to our church to meet with Sister Westerlund who is going to help me with my Family History!  She was there and waiting for us.  So I explained my Grandmothers story and she took notes and we got on the computer to check out ArkivDigital – and of course – there was a new version coming out TODAY April 2nd and it had not been installed – so we couldn’t get to the website!  So she was going to go home and do some research for me and then call the guy – who lives in Örebro – 2 hours away – and he’ll have to come and fix it.  But I feel we had some headway – just getting her filled in on trying to find my Nana’s Mother.  We gave her a ride home – she lives a couple of train stations away from us.  We were able to get a call from Janell when we got home, and catch up on her Spring Break trip.  Jaylen called and he was ready to show us the house and garage!  It looks fantastic, and we didn’t have to get dirty!

Wednesday – Went to work – it was still cold – high 30’s with more wind.  Had a good day at work. Came home – had dinner and headed back to the Church for our Relief Society Activity.  John goes with me and sits out in the foyer and reads.  While all the ladies were chatting and making little tags to go on candy bags to hand out to whoever you’d like to brighten their day.  The Young Sister Missionaries were there and about 10 other ladies – we got to laughing pretty hard just talking and hearing about their days.

Thursday – Happy Anniversary to Jon and Rachel!  16 years, it’s hard to believe it’s been that long ago. Their son JT is in 8th grade and in Social Studies they are learning about the Viet Nam war.  So he has written email’s asking for more information and he told us that he had told the class a couple of stories that John had told him about that he wanted to share.   We did go to work – normal day – and back home and we didn’t have to go anywhere – Whew!

Friday – Went to work, we sent off our shuttles to Germany had lunch and worked until 3 and went home, had dinner and headed back out to Stockholm to go to the YSA (Young Single Adult) Center for their Home Evening – they found they didn’t have a lot of kids that would come out on Monday so they change it up and sometimes have it on Friday – so we went to support them – The Johnson’s were having their farewell party at the Mission Home – so we missed that but we were able to substitute for them – they leave for home on Monday.  It was fun meeting all the kids – they are 18-30 yrs old.  They had 2 talk about their mission. They showed some pictures and talked about their mission the girl had gone to London England and the boy had gone to Spain.  The hard part was that they spoke in Swedish the whole time!  So with their hand gestures and body language – we made up our own stories!  We did get to meet a High Councilor from the Stake that was there – he just had to make sure they locked up the building.  So we sat and talked with him until the kids were ready to leave.  We had a good evening.

Hotel/Restaurant
Saturday – Since we had to change our date night  – Laundry to this morning – the alarm went off at 6:45.  After the laundry – we went for a drive out to find the airport.  We came into the Arlanda airport but we were picked up, we were walking zombies from the 10 hour flight and we didn’t remember much!   We saw an airplane right before the airport and they’ve turned it into a hotel/restaurant!
Entrance to Airport

We then headed for Stockholm to deliver some supplies to the Elders there.  Managed to make it through all the traffic and pedestrians!

Old & New Buildings

We tried to read all the Road Signs!

Rolls Royce - Sorry I missed the White Ferrari in front of it!

So Many Signs!
Moose carved into Entrance

It was a beautiful day – Sun was out and shinning and the people flock outside when it is like that!

Prada - Gucci right down the Street

Then headed to the grocery store to pick up items for Tacos – the YSA are meeting Sunday afternoon to watch General Conference together – and in between sessions they are cooking Tacos.  We asked what we could bring and they told us to get lettuce 3-4 balls, 4 yellow paprikas, and 5 red paprikas.  They really meant bell peppers and lettuce heads – language is so funny.

We watched Saturday morning session at 6pm here…..in Utah it was 9am.  We are looking forward to seeing the rest of Saturday’s and Sunday’s session this afternoon and Monday.

We got a Marco Polo from Jenn and Jody – all of our girls and their girls were in the Valley to see Wicked!  It was so good to see them all – Janell missed out because she lives in Hawaii – and Avonlea was missing – she’s 4!  We hear that JT had a track meet – we are waiting to hear more about that!

Sunday – We woke up to a cloudy rainy!  We will be headed to the YSA Center a little after 1pm to get there by 2pm.  We should be home tonight about 10.  We’ll tell you how it goes!  We’re just hoping to hear Conference in English!
John calling "Promise" to let us in!

We wish you a great new week!  We have faith that Spring is coming – we are seeing little flowers popping up and some green starting to show up on bushes – at home we see trees blooming and green trees already!  Happy Spring!

John & Linda

Missionary Week #28

Missionary Week #28  ~  March 25, 2019 – March 31, 2019

Hello Everyone!  We have had another great week.  Our weather is trying to decide if it’s Spring or Winter.  We never know what we will encounter day or night.  So, we live by our Boy Scout Motto “Be Prepared!”

Monday  - We headed to work and the sun was bright and beautiful!  We had a “normal” day at work – other than the other couple brought their Son & family for a tour of the archive.  John let the 2 boys sit and take a picture of the records.  They thought that was pretty cool.

Tuesday – We went to work and worked until noon.  We had made an appointment with the Elders in Stockholm to come and check their apartment at 1pm.  We walked to T-Central and caught the bus that would take us to their apartment. The Elders were in good health and their apartment was clean!  It was good to visit with them – they have a very big area that they serve in and they are on foot and use the bus/train system where ever they need to go.
We came home and ordered lunch at the ASAP Wok, at our train station across from our apartment – new owners – it was pretty good – but when we got there, they didn’t have rice so you could only order one thing, Pad Thai!  It was good, we will probably try them again – later in the day!
Our daughter, Janell and her husband Joshua had been in North & South Carolina for Spring Break.  It took them a couple of days to get back home to Hawaii – they travel on buddy passes – we were glad to hear they finally got home.  Jaylen & Blaire sent a Marco Polo of the huge snake they found in our front yard, so it’s warming up in St. Johns too!
Wednesday – We went to work and it was another beautiful day – it’s warming up, you can see little flowers and plants popping up.  On the way home the train was packed – I finally got a seat but John had to stand all the way to our stop.
Thursday -  We went to work, we had to send in our shuttles today because we get a day off tomorrow.  The archive is having a planning meeting and they will not be in the building and they don’t want us there without them.  We worked until 4pm and headed home.  We got in the door at our apartment and John realized he had left his phone.  His phone is the only phone that has a Sweden phone number, it’s our only means of communication and is our life line to Google Translate and to the bus/train schedule and maps.  He turned right around and headed back to retrieve it.  We would not survive the 3-day weekend without it!   We got a Marco Polo from daughter Jennifer – and her Bridger had fallen on his skate board.  His Nose took the brunt of the fall – but the scrapes were all along his cheek, ear and his shoulder blades, his right arm and left arm.  But he was pretty tough!  He didn’t go to school the next day – it was a tough night for him, he didn’t sleep well.  When he went in the next day and the teacher saw his face (and I’m guessing she was in shock) he looked at her and all he said was “Skateboard” !  😊

Library Room
Dragon Vase
Friday – Our day off!  The sun was shining, and it was windy. We went in to Stockholm to the National Museum, there has always been a huge line out the door when we’ve tried before, but we got there before it was open at 11am.  There was a lot of people waiting to get inside but not bad.  There is no entrance fee, so that is a must see!  There were 3 floors and it is a beautiful building and the exhibits were amazing.  There were a lot of paintings – including a couple of Rembrandts.  It had very old items and very new items!

On Ferry - The Grona Lund Amusement Park - Roller Coasters and rides

Then we walked to a Ferry and went for a ride.  This was a first for us – the bus/train passes work on the Ferry’s!  It took us to another little island and we saw the Grona Lund Amusement park – it’s not open yet but it looks like a lot of fun.  We walked to the Viking Alive museum.  They try to dispel the myth of the Viking helmet with the horns on it.  The Vikings never wore them – they would have been easy to grab or knock them off.  There was a cute little ride like Peter Pan at Disney land – about a story of a Viking Family that was done very nicely.  From there we went to a trolly that took us into downtown Stockholm – there was an accident investigation – ambulance and a stretcher and a lot of “Polis” so the trolly had everyone get off – you just start walking to wherever you wanted to go!  We found a TGI Fridays right there and had an early dinner!  It was about 4pm.  Food was good – they pack their tables in tight!  The waitresses had to squeeze through to get your order and serve the food!  Then we finished walking to T-Central to get our train home.  Busy Day but fun – Sun was shining all day.
Saturday – We looked at a few places we wanted to go – but they were either closed or not open at the right time.  We decided to head out and go to a movie – We saw Dumbo – it’s really cute.  We saw a lot of trailers of new movies that Disney is coming out with “Live” characters of their animated movies, Aladdin, Lion King are a few that we saw….we don’t get TV so it’s new to us – you guys probably already know it! We got a Marco Polo from Jody with her daughter Jayne’s dance performance – it was really cute to see her dancing around!
Sunday – We woke up to a drizzle of rain and then it started Snowing!  It didn’t last – but we still took the umbrella with us as we walked to the train to go to church.  It was Fast Sunday because next week is General Conference.  We are excited to watch that.  We have to wait until later Saturday and Sunday night but we can watch on-line as it becomes available.  It was a great weekend and we look forward to Monday!
We hope you are enjoying Spring wherever you are and enjoy the beauty.  Happy April!

John & Linda

"In an anamorphosis, the artist works with distorted perspectives.  It must be viewed from a special angle or in a custom mirror to be understood.  Charles I  (left) & Charles II (right) are depicted on each side of the wooden panel.  In the portraits, the fates of both kings are shown; the deposed father is depicted with a skull and the son, who rebuilt the British monarchy, with a crowned orb.  the symbols also indicate where to place the cylindrical mirror - we thought that was pretty cool!

Our FINAL Week! Missionary Week #78

Missionary Week 78            March 9, 2020 ~ March 15, 2020 It’s about time I finished telling you about our last week in Sweden!  ...
